I think 9 times out of 10 the bedroom, family room, kitchen, or almost any room we are decorating is smaller than we'd like, but this doesn't mean it is impossible to create an illusion that the room is larger. There are 5 simple fixes to making a room look larger than it really is:
Number 1: Multi-function furnitureFor example, in a living room pieces of furniture such as a couch that folds out into a bed, or a chest that could be used as a coffee table.
Number 2: Mirrors
Mirrors for many different reasons can transform any room. When placed towards a focal point in a room, mirrors can provide depth in all the right places. Not only this, but mirrors also reflect both natural and artificial light into a room, which is especially effective near a window. Mirrors ultimately provide depth, lighting, and a natural flow throughout a room.
Number 3: Furniture Placement
Furniture, being the main focus of most rooms in a home plays a large role in the size a room can appear. Ways to place the furniture for the best results are:
o Avoid blocking pathways with furniture because it makes a room look cluttered
o Placing the largest piece against a wall to make the space more open and bounded
Number 4: Lighting
Although lighting might not necessarily make a room appear larger, different kinds of light can make it appear more open&airy. Natural light from window and doors when brought into a space make it appear much more open.
Number 5: Colors
Pick more neutral colors that can be made bold with an accent wall or different pieces of furniture. Colors like brown, beige, tan, white, gold, etc. are all colors that will make a room appear open and large. Lots of patterns and bright colors confine spaces and make them seem small and restricted.
